She Grows Weak

Screams
                  Crying
                                 Sobbing

Short legs running,
slowed when she came into view.
His bare feet
unable to move.

The concrete carpet
forced him to watch
his future weight
of loss.

Looking up—
from his six years,
her pain, anger, and rage
fueled the tiny room.

NO
               NO

Hair and cancer
littered the room.
The floor, the sink.
Her life, no broom.

Remaining strands
clung to her head,
fighting to stay,
refusing to be dead.

Rivers of fears
flowed from her eyes.
Cancer claiming her hair,
slowly taking her light.

His unsteady voice
spoke forgotten words,
surprising her—
Lost in her world.

The reaction was swift
as her head turned.

Her eyes red,
drowning in tears
for her disappearing years.

Her hands clenching cancer-ridden hair,
lifelessly dangling
between fingers bare,
dripping to the floor
in much despair.

As the room exploded,
her door slammed.

GO AWAY
                   GO AWAY
            Her boy ran.

The concrete released him,
running from her voice,
her pain,
his future.
He had no choice.

As he ran,
his world dimmed.
Further memories too heavy
for his young hands.

In a dream he hid,
hiding from pain,
sobbing
as his mother did.

In that dream,
she found him,
held and loved him,
Did what mothers did.

Wearing her heavy
cloak of strength,
she again stood ten feet in length—
yet underneath,
she grows weak.
